![]() Enhancing military-developed skills in higher education, while adding academic knowledge, can be an effective way for veterans in higher education to transition from military service to civilian employment. When service members enter higher education following military service to move into civilian employment, they bring with them a significant breadth and depth of technical and interpersonal skills ( McNally, Gerras, & Bullis, 1996). Two goals upon which veterans focus during higher education experiences are improving skills developed in the military, and learning new skills and knowledge. For many veterans, pursuing a degree in higher education is an avenue that helps them achieve several goals as they transition out of the military and into civilian life ( Griffin & Gilbert, 2015 Kirchner, 2015). The transient nature of military life, including frequent field training exercises and multiple deployments for those related to combat arms specialties, is not conducive to the constant scanning and exploration required for educational and career updates in today’s job environment ( Elliott, Gonzalez, & Larsen, 2011 Harrington & Harrigan, 2006 Hoge, 2010). ![]() ![]() ![]() Specific challenges pertaining to translating their military experience into terms that civilian employers will understand represent a significant challenge to veterans ( Minnis, 2014 Thompson, 2002).
